What might an analysis of politics which focuses on the operation of power through space and place, and on the spatial structuring of inequality, tell us about the world we make for ourselves and others? From the national border to the wire fence; from th

Facets of Social Geography: International and Indian Perspectives provides a breadth of information on the nature, scope, history and evolution of social geography along with a good representation of approaches and techniques used in this field. It discusses both conceptual and empirical approaches, and traditional and emergent social geography themes including art and culture, urbanism and crime, social institutions of caste, class and religion, gender, disability, activism, feminism, social planning, enterprise zones, social and economic inequities, post-colonialism, post-modernism and development of quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods. India's social structure based on centuries-old Karma principles and a four-level caste system are dealt with in this book to help unravel the country's social geography. This book is a felicitation volume in honour of Allen G. Noble, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Geography and Planning at the University of Akron, Ohio, USA. A result of the collective effort of 40 leading national and international scholars, it is an excellent addition to the current stock of knowledge and will be of interest to geographers, sociologists, demographers, urban and regional planners and policy-makers.

In the past ten years, much has changed in terms of youth justice policies in Canada as well as in the way Canadian society has evolved. Canada has a new Act governing youth crime, and there are indications that the Act will be revised again to make it "tougher" on youth in conflict with the law, a development reflecting what many scholars are calling the "punitive turn" in youth justice policies in Canada and elsewhere. At the same time, Canadian child poverty rates (which are strongly correlated with criminality) have remained high, despite a commitment, made by governments in 1989 to eradicate the problem by the year 2000. Immigration patterns have changed, and unemployment rates for young Canadians remain almost twice as high as those for adults. In this volume, Youth Criminal Justice Policy in Canada: A Critical Introduction, the author addresses these and other developments in relation to youth crime in Canada from a critical criminological perspective.

The intellectual renaissance of human geography has included a widespread engagement between its economic and cultural subdisciplines. This volume adopts a variety of conceptual and empirical perspectives on the encounters between economic and cultural geographers. It offers an introduction and 10 chapters by authors in a variety of national contexts to explicate issues such as the cultural turn in economic geography, the cultural construction of economic geographic thought, consumption, gender, everyday life, commodity chain analysis, trust, networks, the creative economy, and tourism. The volume contains empirical analyses utilizing both quantitative and qualitative approaches at spatial scales ranging from the individual to the global economy. In illustrating how human geographers can ill afford to subscribe to the analytically false dichotomy between “culture” and “the economy,” the book explicates how cultural and economic geography can be seamlessly integrated , bringing them into a creative tension to their mutual benefit.

This collection of essays aims to investigate the complex issues surrounding contemporary cultural discourses on land and identity – their production, construction, and reconstruction across a range of different texts and materials. The chapters offer disciplinary and trans-disciplinary approaches opening up discussion and new routes for research in a number of interrelated areas such as Countryside vs. City, Diaspora, Landscapes of Memory and Trauma, Migrational Spaces, and Ecology. They represent a number of innovative contemporary responses to how concepts of land intersect and dialogue with notions of identity across and between regions, nations, races, and cultures. Through employing interdisciplinary methods and theories drawn from diverse sources, such as cultural studies, spatial theory, philosophy and literary theory, the chapters chart varied and complex themes of identity formation in relation to spatiality.

New Zealand’s environment, so widely celebrated for its beauty and relative integrity, requires wise stewardship in establishing the sustainable development needed for the long-term public good. How well is it fulfilling these aims? This study assesses how far the nation has lived up to the imperatives of a new public environmentalism that closely monitors increased pressure on resources, tracks business and state-sector environmental performance through sensitive performance indices, and expects environmental and economic goals to harmonise, not conflict. The book explains the role of New Zealand’s environmental agencies and regulatory legislation, taking in the impact of international agreements and treaties. It traces the fortunes of sustainable policy approaches and analyzes the activities of the public agencies charged with managing the environment. Moving on to a detailed thematic status report on New Zealand’s environment, it examines rural, freshwater, coastal, oceanic, atmospheric and urban zones. Finally, chapters detail public perceptions and normative environmental values as well as the depth of business commitment to environmental responsibility. An ideal introduction to the topic for a diverse range of scholars, the book eschews any specific theoretical framework in charting the recent evolution, current operation and future trajectory of environmentalism in New Zealand. It backs strategic advice with both social and ecological data, and raises questions over the country’s reputation for greenness at the same time as recognizing its numerous achievements. With neat summaries of key issues at the end of each chapter, expansive guidance on further reading, and a multitude of examples ideal for classroom debate, this volume gives us an informed, objective, and wide-ranging appraisal on a topic of increasing centrality in the policy debate.
